Installation

Windows

If you already have Winpcap installed, you can just cancel its installation when prompted by the application installer.
  • Downlaod and install Java 1.8 or higher from the Oracle website
  • Download and run the windows installer OpenVisualTraceroute.exe
  • The installer will install Winpcap, make sure to check "Automatically start the WinPcap driver at boot time"
  • Run the application named Open Visual Traceroute from the Start Menu

Mac OSX

  • Download the package OpenVisualTraceroute.dmg
  • Double click on the package will mount the package, double click on the application icon inside the package
  • If the following message is displayed “OpenVisualTraceroute.app” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should eject the disk image.", follow this procedure ​ to work around the problem
    • In MacOS Sierra, if the "Anywere" option is not available, open command line and run the following command to enable it
                          sudo spctl --master-disable

Linux Debian (Ubuntu,Mint)

  • Install traceroute, whois and gksu
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install traceroute gksu whois
  • If you don't have any java, install it too
sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre-headless
  • Download and install the deb package ovtr_1.x.y-1_i386.deb or ovtr_1.x.y-1-amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i ovtr_1.x.y*.deb
  • The application will be available in your Unity launcher, type "Open" and the application will should show up.
  • If you have issues installing this package, please follow the universal package instructions
Make sure to install the package corresponding to your OS architecture.

Linux RPM (Redhap, OpenSUSE)

  • Install jwhois with yum or zyper or  from this page.
  • Download and install the deb package ovtr_1.x.y-1_i386.rpm or ovtr_1.x.y-1-x86_64.rpm
sudo rpm -i ovtr_1.x.y*.rpm
  • The application will be available in your programs launcher, type "Open" and the application will should show up.
  • If you have issues installing this package, please follow the universal package instructions

Universal and portable package

  • Download the universal package OpenVisualTraceRoute.zip, unzip it
  • On Linux systems, install Java and traceroute, and set execute privileges to the ovtr.sh, finally run it
unzip OpenVisualTraceRoute.zip
cd OpenVisualTraceRoute
chmod +x ovtr.sh
./ovtr.sh
  • On Windows, install Winpcap and Java, then double click on org.leo.traceroute.jar
If other packages don't match your OS, or you want a portable version of the application that will not require to be installed, this package is for you

   Limitations and known issues

  • Systems that don't have a graphic card/drivers that supports required OpenGL features will not be able to use the 3D map
  • System not correctly setup in term of network/privileges/OS will not be able to use the embedded traceroute and the network packets sniffer. Traceroute will still be availlable with the OS traceroute
  • Sniffer feature is not available on MacOSX​

   Proxy setup

If you are accessing the Internet throught a proxy server, you can set up the proxy hostname as well as your credentials either
  • in the settings dialogs
  • in the $USER_HOME/ovtr/ovtr.properties, when the application is closed
